First Argonaut Painted!

There was a Kickstarter many moons ago that had some pretty awesome resin figures that I thought I would be able to paint up nicely. Then I got them and thought that they were too fancy for my mediocre skills. Finally, around the start of the year, I assembled all  four of the Argonauts. This is only the first to be painted, the test piece to see what I had gotten myself into.

The set came with several weapon options. I decided to build a mix of spears and swords (there were also a couple sets of just fists that went into a bits box for power fist conversions in the future). For the bases, I wanted something simple, so some texture paste and a few randomly sized paving stones cut from used gift cards did the trick.

I primed the Argonaut with my usual dark gray and then drybrushed a lighter gray and then a couple passes of pink drybrushing in preparation of what was to come. My first thought was to simply use metallic golds drybrushed on, but I wanted to try something different. Yellows were the way to go, thus some pink (yellow paint tends to show up better on a pink undercoat) used on the early drybrushing.

The Argonaut is big enough (he's on a 40mm base) that I thought I could try the lil makeup sponge technique that I've used on a few larger figures and terrain things to get the first few coats of color on. I built up the yellow and from a darker brownish yellow to an almost white yellow. Then came the wash.

The Argonaut looked pretty good at this point, but I needed to hit some details and bring back the yellow to make it look a little brighter, I didn't realize that I was sort of doing a gutter gold non-metallic metal. I think it turned out okay and has given me confidence to work on the others sooner rather than later.

I think the Argonauts would fit in well with either sci-fi or fantasy minis in a number of settings. I have no idea what I may use them for, at the moment, but this one was a joy to paint.
