Robot with a Spear, or the "Hoplobot"
I picked up the Dreadball Robot Team from Mantic a long time ago. The intent was to use them as robots, but not scifi football robots. I only used a couple for conversions so far (the legs for this guy and giving this one a gun). This past weekend I decided it was time to do something with another of these bots.
I forgot how annoying the plastic-resin (restic?) of some of the older Mantic figures was to clean up. But the most obvious mold lines were removed. I didn't think of giving this bot the spear until the painting was basically done.
He was just a fighting robot (I've been thinking about doing a Magnus Robot Fighter project for a verrry long time) but I wanted something more for him. After looking at various bits- guns, swords, clubs, etc. I came across the old Wargames Factory Greek spears and thought they looked small enough to easily fit into his small hands.
I drilled carefully through the fist and cut the spear into two pieces. The connection ends were trimmed down so that it would be more secure and look like he was actually holding the spear. It was a lot easier than I expected and looks pretty good. Should he have a shield? I decided against it because it would cover up most of his body and the spear pose looks pretty cool without it.
