Ravaged Star Veil-Touched Abomination - Rhinosaur
From the 'not-Chaos Space Marines, etc.' Ravaged Star Kickstarter comes the Rhinosaur. It's a big mutated guy bristling with weapons like some sort of Obliterator... I decided to name this guy "Rhinosaur" after the Soundgarden song because he's got a rhino-type head and I've been a Soundgarden fan since last century.
This guy is pretty big compared to most of the 28mm stuff we usually paint. I started on the Rhinosaur sometime early in 2024. Then I stopped because of all the details. I wanted to make him look good but lost confidence and got bogged down in all those details... A couple of weeks ago, I came across him in a box of unpainted stuff and decided he had to be finished by the end of 2025.
I decided to go with 'good enough' on the paint job. So, little by little- 20 minutes here, 20 minutes there, I worked on making the weapons stand out from the armor. I worked on the skin and the horns. I worked on the skulls on the base and then the rocks and horns on the base.
Then there was all the baroque trim... But I did it. And then there were a few layers of washes to cover up any mistakes and help separate the parts. Then some highlights and touchups to finish him off. And he was done. Is he as cool as I hoped- maybe. The main thing is that he's done. Now he can menace the Techno-Feudal Monster Hunters. I may have accidentally started a bit of a Chaos Space Marine warband with the Rhinosaur (there's at least one olde metal and plastic figure I want to strip and repaint). He can also fit in nicely with the various rogue robots I've been finishing for use in the wastelands outside the Tech Bazaar.
Now to all the size comparison pics to help show how big the Rhinosaur is, his base is 50mm. Above is the standard comparison crew (Raging Heroes Jailbird and GW Primaris). Below, the Rhinosaur with a couple of the Daughters of the Night from the same Kickstarter.
Above, a couple of the Chaos Marines from the Blackstone Fortress starter box. Below, the Necromunda Ambot is not so big standing next to the Rhinosaur.
Above, the Ghar Battlesuits are not as intimidating next to this big guy. And finally, below, another recent big guy- the not-Badrock is on a 60mm base and makes the Rhinosaur look a little less huge.
