The Enduring Captain Ridel Finally Gets a Mini
When I was a wee lad, there were these cool Fighting Fantasy Game Books that I had tons of. Eventually I decided to try to make my own, it was a sci-fi dungeon crawl. It didn't get very far, but one of the encounters I made was a "Captain Ridel" who was a bounty hunter. Then it went in a folder. Some years later, Captain Ridel came back as a galactic law enforcement agent specializing in fugitive retrieval (basically a bounty hunter) for an rpg setting and some random short stories. Over the years he's been there in the back of my mind, and now I've painted a mini roof him- well based on one of the latter versions of him.
When I first saw the Vokker Dargu figure from the Sedition Wars Kickstarter I thought he'd make a great Captain Ridel. The pose and outfit seemed to fit the feel of those horrible sketches I'd drawn of him. Now he's finally been painted and he looks pretty okay.
I had to give him a slightly larger base (30mm) because of his dynamic pose. Otherwise, just a tiny bit of cleanup of mold lines that I believe I got the details are not super crisp and I used what has become my go to style of quick and dirty paintjob. For his armor, I liked the idea of my favorite aqua color under a dirty brown trenchcoat.
Above is a size comparison lineup with a Raging Heroes Jailbird, Primaris Marine, and a Victoria Miniatures Highlander. Below we have Ridel with some Antares Freeborn figures because I thought he might fit in that setting too.
Now Captain Ridel can take part in some tabletop fights and I'm happy for that. Long ago I did another bounty hunter from his same setting but I wasn't able to quickly find her.
A bonus piece of Ridel's secret origin story- his name comes from the brand of record player we had when I was a kid. It seemed out of the ordinary, so it was something I thought would make a cool space guy name.
