Dungeons & Lasers Demon Tree or Just a Treeman (666)
This seems to be the 666th post, according to the blogger counter, so to celebrate (or because it was just the latest miniature finished) we have the Demon Tree from Dungeons&Lasers.
I've wanted an impressive treeman miniature for quite some time. When I saw the D&L plastic "Demon Tree" I had to do more research into what the figure actually looked like. The pictures on the box show two victims hanging from the limbs. I needed to see how easy it would be to leave those off, they'll get used eventually as prisoners or trophies hanging from a terrain piece or a big stompy robot. When I was satisfied (after studying the figure for a couple of months) it would be a good fit for what I wanted, I got it from the local shop.
It was assembled almost right away, but I wasn't sure what to do about the big open area in the upper back section. It looked weird without many branches there. I pondered a few different solutions and settled on some stripped fake plant branches glued in the big gap. Some superglue and backing soda helped secure the slightly bendy green plastic and a little superglue and backing soda spread on the lengths of plastic helped keep them a little more rigid.
The painting got bogged down after I finished a few layers of progressively lighter browns and the boggy base was almost finished. It was over a month before I came back to him and cut loose with some greens for the vines and a new fluorescent green mixed with my glow-in-the-dark olde Partha Paint.
The next steps were a couple of different washes for the nice deep bark crevasse details on the original branches. This was followed up with some targeted painting of some browns and targeted drybrushing of lighter browns to get to the result that is close to what I was hoping for. He's on a huge 75mm round base. I had pondered putting him on an even bigger base that I would scratchbuild some scenery on, but in the end I decided the boggy base would be fine.
