Chaos Squats Progress For Slaaneshi Warband
I finally got my hands on the Wargames Atlantic Death Fields Einherjar (aka- space dwarves, aka- not-Squats) so I could build up 9 of them for my old school Realm of Chaos warband. These sprues are pretty great. I dipped into my various bits boxes to help these dwarves become a bit more Slaaneshi. I tried to make each one a little different while keeping them slightly cohesive as a unit. Only one of them has been fully painted so far as a test of the colors I wanted to use.
Presented in the order they were built:
This first one was going to set the tone for the rest- but then he didn't. I thought they would all end up with the fur collar that would then be painted exotically, because Slaanesh. That didn't happen because the collar didn't fit quite as snugly as I had hoped. I'm not sure if that's what made the left arm fit a little crooked, but there was a big gap that needed to be filled, so I grabbed a feather bundle from an Aztec plastic kit to help cover that sin.
Next was a bit more straightforward, aside from the magnetization on his base so he can use the magnetized melta gun from the Chaos Space Marine.
Then came the first combination of this kit with arms from the convict troopers kit, also by Wargames Atlantic. I wanted a mix of weapons to represent all the different types of lasguns available. I thought these arms would work well- and they really do. I removed the bayonet on this first one and thought it looked good.
This next guy got what may technically be a shotgun from the Einherjar kit, but I'm saying it's just a different type of lasgun. He also got a bumpy tail, because Slaanesh.
A spike from the original plastic Dark Eldar kit made its way onto the helmet of this next guy. Is he the leader of this small group of Chaos Squats, probably not, but does seem to be giving directions to the others. And he's the first one with a horn on his helmet. He will not be the last. He also got a fancy Dark Eldar knife and pouches from a more recent plastic kit. PLUS, he's the test mini. I like how he turned out, but I need to simplify the paint scheme to help speed up the painting process.
Our second Squat with a convict arms and lasgun set got to keep the bayonet because I thought it looked cool with this pose. This is the first (and only?) Chaos Squat without a helmet. Plus he's got a bionic eye.
This sixth guy got a horn from the ancient GW skeletons kit. I drilled a hole in his helmet and cut down the end of the horn so it would fit in the hole securely.
This next to last guy got another ancient Dark Eldar plastic bit, the fancy plume in his helmet was a ponytail from that kit. The vials hanging from his belt might have some sort of drugs in them.
And finally, this last guy got another set of convict trooper arms along with a bit of plastic branch as a horn for his helmet.
A couple of comparison pics with some 28mm scale painted and partially painted minis I was able to get my hands on. ABOVE- some Highland Clan Warrior and a Monkey Miniatures monkey-guy. BELOW- olde GW plastic Squat body with Victoria Miniatures head and arms, olde GW Eldar Musician, and Reaper Bones human-sized alien guy.
I'm going to try to paint up the last 8 of these guys in batches of 2 or 3 at a time. There's not a rush, but I really wnt to see them together in all their painted glory.
